Abstract for presentation

It is essential for researchers to publish their work in English language scientific journals. The writing of a manuscript in English and submitting it to a journal can seem rather daunting for non-native English speaking graduate students with no, or little experience of the process. In this talk I will present the process that your manuscript goes through at the journal and some pointers on how to increase its chances of being accepted for review and ultimately, publication. This will include issues of manuscript organization, formatting, citations, and plagiarism. I will also illustrate some frequent English language mistakes made by Chinese authors.

Professor Emeritus Philip Nash was the Charles and Lee Finkl Endowed Chair in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He received his B.Sc. in Metallurgy in 1973 from City of London Polytechnic, UK and his PhD in Materials Science in 1978 from Queen Mary College, University of London, U.K. He then worked as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant with Professor David West at Imperial College, University of London determining ternary phase diagrams of Nickel-base alloys. He joined IIT’s Metallurgical Engineering Department in 1981 as a Visiting Assistant Professor. He founded the Thermal Processing Technology Center at IIT in1999 and served as its Director until June 2019. He was an editor of Journal of Materials Science for 30 years. In 2009 he was elected a Fellow of ASM International and in 2012 received the Charles Hatchett award from the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining in London, UK. He is currently a Global Professor of the University of Arizona teaching at Hebei University of Technology, Tianjin. He is co-inventor on two patents relating to steel processing and alloy design. Professor Nash’s research is in physical and process metallurgy and has included particle coarsening, experimental determination of phase diagrams, experimental thermodynamics, forging simulations, bainite transformation studies, fatigue of steel plates, precipitation in aluminum alloys, titanium powder metallurgy, metal matrix/carbon nanotube composites, solid oxide fuel cells, additive manufacturing and functional intermetallics. He has published more than 200 journal articles and edited several books. He has advised the research of 40 PhD students and more than 50 MS students.

名誉教授菲利普·纳什曾担任伊利诺伊理工学院冶金与材料工程系查尔斯与李·芬克尔捐赠讲席教授。他于1973年获得英国伦敦城市理工学院冶金学学士学位，1978年获得英国伦敦大学玛丽女王学院材料科学博士学位。随后，他在伦敦大学帝国理工学院担任大卫·韦斯特教授的博士后研究助理，从事镍基合金三元相图的研究工作。他于1981年以访问助理教授身份加入伊利诺伊理工学院冶金工程系。1999年创立该校热处理技术中心并担任主任直至2019年6月。曾担任《材料科学杂志》编辑长达30年。2009年当选美国材料学会会士，2012年获英国伦敦材料矿产与采矿学会颁发的查尔斯·哈切特奖。现任亚利桑那大学全球教授，在天津河北工业大学任教。持有两项涉及钢铁加工与合金设计的专利共同发明人资格。纳什教授的研究领域涵盖物理冶金与过程冶金，研究内容包括：晶粒粗化、相图实验测定、实验热力学、锻造模拟、贝氏体转变研究、钢板疲劳、铝合金析出相、钛粉末冶金、金属基/碳纳米管复合材料、固体氧化物燃料电池、增材制造及功能性金属间化合物。他已发表期刊论文逾200篇，并主编多部专著。指导过40名博士生及50余名硕士生的研究工作。
